Pallante Has Been Excellent in His Last 2 Starts in a Solid Season
The Cardinals lightly punted at the MLB trade deadline, but they are still hovering around contention for a Wild Card spot. In the final game of their series in the Bronx, they send righty Andre Pallante to the mound.
Pallante has had a very good season and has been excellent in his last two starts against the Reds and Cubs. In those outings, he's tossed 13.1 innings, allowed 9 hits, and 2 earned runs. For the season, he has a 1.9 bWAR and a 3.72 ERA. Over 118.2 frames, he's allowed 111 hits, 49 earned runs, and 10 homers, walking 34 and striking out 86.
Alec Burleson had a 3-homer game on Monday and has an OPS of .830. JJ Wetherholt has an OPS approaching .740 and a 4.2 bWAR. Jordan Walker is having a breakout season with an OPS over .830 and 22 homers.
Against Will Warren, Burleson is 2 for 4 with 2 singles. Ivan Herrera is 1 for 4 with a single. Masyn Winn is 0 for 6 with 2 K's. Walker is 0 for 3 with a walk and 2 K's. Nathan Church is 0 for 2.
Warren Comes Off a Tremendous Start Against the Cubs
Will Warren had an eventful week. In his last start against the Cubs, he tossed 6.2 shutout innings, allowing only 4 hits, walking none, and striking out 7. Then, there were reports that at the trade deadline, the Bombers offered Warren to the Padres for reliever Adrian Morejon. GM Brian Cashman semantically denied the story, saying a "formal offer" was not made.
In 2026, Warren has a 0.2 bWAR and a 4.14 ERA. In 108.2 innings, he's allowed 112 hits, 50 earned runs, and 15 homers, walking 36 and striking out 109.
New York has made substantive changes to its roster. First, they acquired Luis Garcia Jr. to boost the offense. He still leads the NL in slugging percentage. Then it acquired outfielder Heliot Ramos. Jaason Dominguez and Anthony Volpe were sent to Triple-A. Top prospect George Lombard was recalled. Lombard showed good plate discipline in the minors and has speed. He can't be less useful at shortstop than Volpe was.
They are still playing Austin Wells with his .167 average and Ryan McMahon with his .212 average. Giancarlo Stanton is supposedly close to returning, but take that with a block of salt. Ben Rice continues to lead the team with a .907 OPS and 31 homers.
For the Yankees against Pallante, Jazz Chisholm Jr. is 1 for 3 with a home run. McMahon is 2 for 8 with a double and a home run. Ramos is 2 for 8 with a home run. Rice is 2 for 3 with a double. Amed Rosario is 1 for 5 with a single. Garcia is 2 for 10 with a double. Caballero is 1 for 2 with a single.
Cardinals vs Yankees Pick
There is a perception that the Yankees did not do enough at the deadline. Now, they have tried to solve a problem at shortstop with arguably their best prospect. Perhaps they are expecting Stanton and Aaron Judge back to boost the offense.
For this matchup, Warren has been maddeningly inconsistent. Pallante has been consistently good for much of the season. St. Louis will take the win in the Bronx over the Bombers behind Pallante.
