Holmes Hopes to Continue His Solid, Workmanlike Year
The Braves, 1st place in the NL East, send righty Grant Holmes to the hill to try and stave off a 3-game sweep in the Bronx.
Holmes has been one of Atlanta’s more reliable starters this season, unspectacular but workmanlike and solid. In his last start, he held the Marlins scoreless over 6 frames, allowing 5 hits, walking 1 and striking out 5.
For the season, he has a 1.7 bWAR and a 3.67 ERA. Over 108 innings, he’s allowed 99 hits, 44 earned runs, and 18 homers, walking 46 and striking out 92. The walks are his main problem when he struggles.
The Braves are one of MLB‘s leading home run-hitting teams with Matt Olson leading the way with 33. Drake Baldwin seems to have recovered from his oblique injury and subsequent slump with 20 homers and an .815 OPS. Michael Harris is batting .291 with 20 homers and an .815 OPS. Ronald Acuña has missed a chunk of the season, but has 12 homers and an .802 OPS. Austin Riley continues to have a terrible season with a .222 average, a .665 OPS and 14 homers.
The only Braves hitters who have faced Cam Schlittler are Mauricio Dubon and Lane Thomas. Dubon is 1 for 2 with a single. Thomas is 2 for 5 with a double.
Schlittler Nees a Rebound After a Rare Poor Start in 2026
Cam Schlittler is still in contention to win the AL Cy Young Award, but his last start against the Cardinals dented his ERA. In 3 innings, he allowed 4 earned runs and 4 hits, walking 5 and striking out 6.
For the season, however, he has a 4.5 bWAR and an AL-leading 2.26 ERA. Over 139.2 frames, he’s allowed 102 hits, 35 earned runs, and 13 homers, walking 31 and striking out 171. The Yankees need to hope that poor control against St. Louis was just an anomaly.
The Bombers also rely on the home run, led by Ben Rice with 32 and a .903 OPS. They got some good news on the injury front with Aaron Judge cleared for light activity with the slugger vowing to return this season.
Rookie shortstop George Lombard is batting .385 in his first week in the majors with 2 homers. Newly acquired 1st baseman Luis Garcia is hitting .267 with a homer in pinstripes. Austin Wells continues his horrid season with a .173 average.
Against Grant Holmes, Garcia is 4 for 10 with 2 doubles and a home run. Ryan McMahon is 2 for 5 with a home run. Paul Goldschmidt is 2 for 5 with 2 singles. Amed Rosario is 2 for 2 with 2 singles. Heliot Ramos is 1 for 4 with a single.
Braves vs Yankees Pick
Atlanta tries to avoid a sweep facing one of the better pitchers in baseball in Schlittler. Holmes has been good this season, but he tends to walk people and the Yankees hit for sufficient power to make him pay.
The Bombers seem to be getting a jolt from their newcomers, particularly Lombard.
For this matchup, the Yankees will come out on top behind Schlittler and complete the sweep of the Braves.
