The Blue Jays have had a disappointing season as they tried to defend their AL crown and get back to the World Series. Kevin Gausman has been reasonably solid, but the rest of the rotation apart from Dylan Cease has been shaky.
His ERA sits at 4.19, but it was blown up in the two starts before his last one in which he allowed 13 earned runs in 8 innings against the Cubs and Rangers. He rebounded against the Mets, tossing 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 7.
He also did former teammate Bo Bichette a solid.
Overall, he has a 1.7 bWAR along with that 4.19 ERA. He is tied for the MLB lead in starts with 18. Over 101 frames, he's allowed 96 hits, 47 earned runs, and 15 homers, walking 24 and striking out 100.
Toronto has been devoid of power except for Kazuma Okamoto with 19 homers. George Springer has 8; Ernie Clement, Andres Gimenez, Jesus Sanchez, Brandon Valenzuela, and Daulton Varsho have 7. Worryingly, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has 4 homers and a .697 OPS. It warrants speculation as to whether something is physically wrong with him.
The only Blue Jays hitter who's faced Landen Roupp is Luis Urias, who is 1 for 3 with a single and a K.
The Giants have been a borderline disaster this season with a rookie manager in Tony Vitello and a high-priced roster that is not gelling. As they try to crawl into contention with the trade deadline approaching, they send Landen Roupp to the hill.
Facing the Diamondbacks in his last start, the righty surrendered 6 earned runs in 2.2 innings. For the season, however, he's been respectable with a 0.2 bWAR and a 4.55 ERA, but those numbers obscure much of his season. He's had three atrocious starts against the Mets, Brewers, and D-Backs in which he allowed 19 earned runs in 11.2 innings.
Overall, he's thrown 89 innings, allowed 82 hits, 45 earned runs, and 6 homers, walking 40 and striking out 99.
Rafael Devers has a .791 OPS and 18 homers. Casey Schmitt has been one of the few Giants who has not disappointed with an .806 OPS and 17 homers. Willy Adames is batting .232 with 14 homers. Matt Chapman only has 7 homers. Bryce Eldridge is a Rookie of the Year contender with an .841 OPS and 7 homers in 47 games.
For San Francisco, when facing Gausman, Devers is 11 for 33 with 7 doubles and a home run. Heliot Ramos is 1 for 3 with a home run. Luis Arraez has hammered Gausman, going 9 for 12 with 2 doubles and a triple. Eric Haase is 2 for 7 with a double and a triple. Adames is 1 for 6 with a single.
Toronto has the advantage on the mound, but San Francisco has more power at the plate. Which will come out on top?
The Blue Jays are still playoff contenders despite being 7 games below .500. But the Giants are not contenders and are preparing for a possible sell-off at the deadline. Still, the Blue Jays have lost 8 of 11.
Despite the Jays being favored, the Giants will take this one behind Roupp as they have hit Gausman well in the past and will do so again.
