Prestigious sprint action on the turf is set for Europe on Saturday, as Newmarket hosts the G1 July Cup. This race was first run in 1876, and the winner has largely been acknowledged as the champion sprinter in Europe.
Venetian Sun will be a red-hot contender for the Karl Burke team after recording back-to-back wins since flopping in the 1,000 Guineas. The three-year-old was excellent at Royal Ascot last month, holding off Spicy Marg to land the G1 Commonwealth Cup. However, only one three-year-old has won this race in the last six years.
Almeraq has reached a new level for the William Haggas yard this season, winning on back-to-back starts at Salisbury and Ascot. His victory over Satono Reve at Royal Ascot in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes could be the key form line.
The Japanese runner once again re-opposes this weekend, and he could be capable of a strong effort with his British debut run under his belt. Holds key form lines with the world’s best sprinter, finishing behind Ka Ying Rising on two occasions in Hong Kong.
Mission Central is the runner from the Aidan O’Brien yard, and the three-year-old could yet be very handy over sprint distances after winning three straight races at the start of this season. Showed his quality at Ascot last time to hold off the talented Rayevka in the G1 King Charles III Stakes.
Many Royal Ascot form lines will be represented this weekend, but a chance could be taken on the winner of the Wokingham Stakes. Double Rush has progressed rapidly under Andrew Balding this season, winning on three straight starts. Has already thrived in handicaps at Newmarket this term, winning on a pair of starts with plenty in hand. More than capable of taking this step up in grade in his stride.
