The most significant race day of the season at Horseshoe Indianapolis is set for this Saturday, with the card headlined by the G3 Indiana Derby. There is a wide-open feel to the race, with a talented field of nine all holding interesting claims.

Bob Baffert-trained Desert Gate will be a red-hot favorite after winning twice from four starts this year. The son of Omaha Beach was an incredibly talented juvenile, winning the G3 Best Pal and finishing second in the G1 American Pharoah. Has been below that level this year, and a bounce back is required after finishing fourth in last month’s G3 Ohio Derby.

Out Of The Woods could be a horse that is still improving. The Philip D’Amato runner won on back-to-back starts in April and May, before finishing second in the Delaware Derby on his stakes debut last month.

Brad Cox runners should always be respected in this race, and Irad Ortiz will be aboard Leading Change. The three-year-old made a striking winning start under rules at Churchill Downs last month, and looks primed for a bold bid now dropped into stakes company.

Creole Chrome should also be capable of playing a part this weekend. The three-year-old has been tested at the highest level this term, finishing fourth in the G1 Blue Grass and fifth in the G2 Pat Day Mile. Oozed class on his latest effort when winning the Cheval Stakes.

Indiana Derby Picks

At the prices, Bricklin could be of the most interest. The three-year-old by Nyquist ran a career-best effort when fourth in the G1 Arkansas Derby, and that form has worked out very well. Was below that standard when fourth in the Long Branch at Monmouth last time, but has winning course form to his name, which could be crucial.
