The feature on Day Two of the Newmarket July Festival will be the G1 Falmouth Stakes, run over a distance of a mile. It will present clues for upcoming Breedersā Cup races later this season, and a high-quality field will contest the race on Friday, including a number of horses that will be stepping into open company for the first time.
Precise has been a stunning performer for the Aidan OāBrien team this season, winning the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas and the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Suitably bred for a mile, but the yard havenāt won this race since Roly Poly in 2017.
Older horses have won two of the last three editions, meaning that Blue Bolt shouldnāt be dismissed. Colin Keane will take the ride on the Andrew Balding runner, and the four-year-old has been a revelation this season, winning on back-to-back starts. Took her form to the next level when last seen, landing the G2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Balantina is one of the most interesting contenders in the field this weekend, having reappeared with an excellent fifth in the G1 Coronation Stakes behind Precise. Entitled to come on for that run, and could be open to any amount of progress.
Venetian Lace and Evolutionist will both re-oppose Precise this weekend. The latter may not be suited by faster ground, but the fact that she is a previous course and distance winner does bode well for her chances.
Falmouth Stakes Picks
OāBrienās weak record in this race could make Precise opposable this week. Therefore, Fallen Angel could be an interesting contender on her second start after a layoff. The five-year-old bested Blue Bolt at Newmarket in the G1 Sun Chariot Stakes last October, and has won on two from three career starts at HQ.
