High-quality fillies will be in action at Saratoga this weekend, as clues for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf will be on offer. European raiders have excelled in this race in recent years, winning three of the previous five editions.

Therefore, it is unsurprising that Charlie Appleby-trained Abashiri heads the betting. William Buick travels over to take the ride. The three-year-old was an impressive winner on debut at Kempton, before being thrown into the deep end when finishing a respectable fifth in the G1 1,000 Guineas. An improved effort followed at the Curragh taking third behind Precise in the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas. Steps up in trip, which could unlock potential as a daughter of Frankel.

Fitz Right is likely to be the leading American-trained contender this weekend for Chad Brown. She has won three straight races, including two victories in stakes races. It could be argued that she has had perfect trips in all three races, but improvement will be required if she is to maintain her excellent record.

Faithful Departed is a very interesting contender for the Grant Forster yard. She was mightily impressive when winning the G3 Regret, with that form being upgraded since following Tam Tam’s subsequent win. The turn of foot was impressive, and her recent workouts suggest that further improvement could still be on the cards.

Just Aloof is also trained by Chad Brown, but improvement will be required after back-to-back fourth-place finishes. Imaginationthelady should be respected despite the draw. She was excellent when winning the Edgewood on the Kentucky Derby card, beating Just Aloof and Tam Tam. That form has worked out well, and she looks versatile in terms of course and ground.

Belmont Oaks Picks

Appleby’s Abashiri looks like the horse to beat in the Belmont Oaks. Further progress is expected now up in trip, and the daughter of Frankel could be set for some big targets Stateside. Kensington Lane may be quick enough to hold onto third, while Faithful Departed looks to have the form in the book to finish second.
