Event Preview
One of the most historic golf events on the global calendar is set for this week, as The Open Championship is staged at Royal Birkdale. This event is the oldest on the PGA Tour calendar, having been staged for the first time in 1860. A purse of $17 million will be up for grabs, with a total yardage of 7,156 covered.
It is the first time since Jordan Spieth's Open win in 2017 that Royal Birkdale will host the final major of the season. Scottie Scheffler is an unsurprising favorite to become the first player since Padraig Harrington in 2008 to retain his title. However, his long sequence of paydays ended when he failed to make the cut at last weekend's Scottish Open.
Rory McIlroy endured a frustrating weekend in Scotland last time out, but he rallied to finish in T7. The Northern Irishman has previous success at Royal Birkdale, finishing T4 back in 2017. Holds very obvious claims this weekend.
Matt Fitzpatrick has been in red-hot form this season, winning three times on the PGA Tour. His excellent streak continued with a T3 at the Scottish Open last weekend. Is yet to carry that form into a major this season, but he was T4 at last year's Open.
Collin Morikawa is a defending champion worth considering this weekend. The American has been largely consistent this season, and followed up a T17 finish at the U.S. Open with a third at the Travelers Championship. Seaminingly goes well on links courses.
The Open Picks
After failing to win in 44 attempts, this weekend could be Tommy Fleetwood's moment in a major. The reigning FedEx Cup champion has been in consistent form throughout this season, echoed by a T13 finish at the Scottish Open last weekend. Finished T27 at The Open back in 2017, and has achieved three top tens since 2019.
