  • The Super Bowl LIX matchup now is locked in and the big game quickly approaches.
  • Millions of dollars are spent on Super Bowl ads each year by a variety of companies.
  • We ranked some of the most unique, funny, heart-warming and very best of these ads.

With the Super Bowl quickly nearing, this year’s ads have already begun to leak. Before we see more of the celebrity-filled ads of today, let’s reflect on some of the most classic ads from the past 25 years.

#8 – Budweiser Puppy (2017)

For years, Budweiser has run its classic Clydesdale advertisements. In 2017, they added a brand new furry friend to the mix. This bittersweet commercial shows an adorable puppy doing everything possible to re-unite with his horse pals. It’s not the funniest ad, but it tugs on heartstrings in just the right ways.

#7 – E-Trade Baby (2008)

Pivoting to funny ads, we have the E-Trade baby, which spawned an entire series of commercials thanks to its popularity. Although a bit unsettling, the E-Trade baby nailed the humor of the era and made an obscure trading company a household name. Imagine if AI was used to make this ad today.

#6 – Puppy Monkey Baby (2016)

Taking it up ten notches on the unsettling scale, we have one of the weirdest Super Bowl commercials ever. This ad is more infamous than iconic, but it’s quite fun in hindsight. It was just a really, really out of pocket commercial that no one expected. People under the influence were likely especially confused.

#5 – It’s a Tide Ad (2018)

Enough puppies and babies, here’s an ad that was just genuinely clever. Tide took advantage of how generic most commercials are, parodying a wide variety of them while showing off their product. The multiple fake-endings add another level to the brilliance of this ad. Old Spice was probably pissed.

#4 – Betty White Snickers (2010)

The late great Betty White didn’t let her age stop her from acting in this iconic ad. America loved seeing their sweet old grandma get tackled into the mud, causing this ad to run well beyond the Super Bowl. Snickers already had a winning ad campaign with this slogan, and took it to the next level with White.

#3 – Terry Tate (2003)

Betty White didn’t start America’s passion for seeing average joes get tackled, Terry Tate did. The “office linebacker” was employed in this humorous commercial to keep employees on their toes. While Terry Tate is an iconic character, Reebok didn’t do the greatest job of connecting their brand to this ad.

#2 – Should’ve Used FedEx (2006)

Back in 2006, FedEx aired one of the funniest and most underrated Super Bowl ads. Being fired for using a service that doesn’t exist yet is the type of frustration that everyone deals with sometimes. Not only was it relatable, but the punchline of the instant karma the caveman receives is the icing on the cake.

#1 – Doritos Time Machine (2014)

In 2014, Doritos ran a contest where anyone could create and submit their own Super Bowl ad. The winner was Ryan Thomas Andersen, who made this amazing ad. Anderson also plays the man who uses the time machine, perfectly delivering the line “Jimmy? You’re so old!” His legacy lives on in this ad.

Bonus Prop: Car Ad in First Commercial Break

Cars, beers, and gambling sites will undoubtedly continue to dominate the Super Bowl advertising landscape. It’s a bit of a toss-up what will be aired in the very first ad-break following kickoff, but a car commercial is a very good bet. These odds are worth the risk considering how many car ads will play.
