Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City Preview

City Looking To Get Off To Perfect Start

Manchester City enjoyed another season to remember in 2020-21, as they went 21 games unbeaten in the top-flight on their way to being crowned champions for the third time in four years. Pep Guardiola will be aware that his side will need to improve further if they are to successfully defend their title, and they have already made moves to add to their squad. Jack Grealish signed for the club for a British-record fee from Aston Villa, and is likely to have a big part to play as City compete on all fronts.

However, City’s season didn’t get off to the perfect start, as they were beaten in the traditional curtain raiser for the new season by Leicester City. The Foxes claimed a 1-0 win the Community Shield at Wembley, with former City striker Kelechi Iheaneacho scoring the decisive goal in the final minute of the 90. However, City are likely to recall a host of first-team stars for the first game of the league season against Spurs.

New Era At Spurs Begins

It has been all change off the pitch for Tottenham Hotspur over the summer, as Nuno Espirito Santo will begin his first season at the club on Sunday. The former Wolves boss was brought into a precarious position, as the club were fighting to keep Harry Kane despite the England captain pushing for a move away from North London. Kane’s most likely destination remains City, but Santo admitted this week that the striker is likely to play a part in the opening fixture of the new season.

Spurs will be looking to improve on their performance from last season, as they finished in seventh, and have brought in Bryan Gill to add further depth to the wide positions. Tottenham ended their preparations for the new season with a friendly 1-0 win over North London rivals Arsenal. Heung Min Son scored the only goal with ten minutes remaining of the 90.

Recent Meetings

Manchester City are still yet to win a league match at the New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They have lost on both Premier League visits to the stadium, and were also beaten there in the crucial Champions League fixture between the sides in the 2018-19 season. However, City have won the last two, including a dominant 3-0 win at the Etihad in February.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City Pick

Spurs will be boosted by the return of Kane, but reigning Premier League champions very rarely lose on the opening weekend of the season. City are our pick to win this fixture, but it could be an entertaining game with both sides finding the net.
