The biggest race on the calendar in the United States is just days away, with the 2023 edition of the Kentucky Derby being staged on Saturday, May 6. Horses aged three will be eligible to compete in the opening Triple Crown race, which will be staged at Churchill Downs.

Before Betting On Kentucky Derby 2023

The opening Triple Crown of the season will be staged at Churchill Downs this weekend, and it promises to be one of the most exciting in recent seasons. Forte has been the long-time favorite for trainer Todd Pletcher, and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hero is certainly one of the most exciting contenders that we have seen in recent years.

The three-year-old has continued to progress throughout this season, landing victories in both the G2 Fountain of Youth and G1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. He is the highest-rated horse in the field, and could feasibly be the most realistic contender to win the Triple Crown since Justify.

Tapit Trice and Practical Move have both progressed throughout the season, and both hold very credible chances this weekend. However, Angel of Empire could be the biggest danger to Forte after landing an emphatic win in the G1 Arkansas Derby for Todd Pletcher.

Extra attention will also be placed on the Japanese raiders this year, with Derma Sotogake appearing the nation’s best chance of ever winning the Kentucky Derby. The three-year-old continued his excellent form earlier in the year, as he sprinted clear of the field in the G2 UAE Derby at Meydan.

This is a thrilling renewal of the Kentucky Derby, and I’m hugely excited to see Forte back in action again. The Pletcher runner looks to be the standout contender, and he’s our number one selection. Derma Sotogake could run into a place, while an outside selection could be Two Phil’s, who warmed up for the Derby with an excellent success in the Jeff Ruby Steaks.
