UEFA Champions League Preview

The betting would suggest that this should be a clear cut victory for the home side, but there has been enough evidence over the past couple of weeks in Serie A that would suggest that there should be some doubt in the mind of gamblers. Juventus have been struggling throughout the final rounds of fixtures in Italy, and have won just once in their last four fixtures. Their restart also didn’t get off to the best of starts as they were beaten in the Coppa Italia final by Napoli. There will be a lot of pressure on Juventus in this fixture, as this was meant to be the season that Cristiano Ronaldo was going to fire them to a first European Cup since 1996.

Of course, Ronaldo will need to have the support of his teammates as Lyon will be looking to defend as they did in the first leg. The Portuguese superstar has been in excellent form this campaign, as he has scored 35 goals in 46 games in all competitions. That tally includes 31 goals in 33 Serie A games. It would be an unlikely success for the French side if they are to get through to the next stage of the Champions League, but they do hold the advantage.

Lyon go to Turin holding a 1-0 lead from the home leg in France, as Lucas Tousart scored the only goal of the game on that occasion. Lyon were defensively solid in that fixture, as they allowed just two shots on target for Juventus. That solid defensive work ethic was on full display again last time out, as they held Paris Saint-Germain to a 0-0 draw in the French League Cup final. Lyon were eventually beaten on penalties, but they would still take confidence from the fact that they were as defensively secure on that outing as they were in February when they played against Juventus.

Latest Team News

Juventus may go into this fixture missing a few of their most talented players. Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa are both doubts for the Old Lady, while Mattia De Sciglio and Sami Khedira may be fit enough for a place on the bench. Meanwhile, Lyon will have a fully fit squad to choose from, as Memphis Depay is back fit again.

Juventus vs Lyon Prediction

This fixture will be closer than many people think, and the result will largely depend on who manages to score the first goal in the game. If Lyon defend as well as they did in the first leg, then they could progress. However, it’s hard to discount Juventus because Cristiano Ronaldo will be determined to fire his side through to the next round.
