The World Cup quarterfinals get underway this weekend, and a tie that needs very little setting up will see two of the European heavyweights squaring off for a place in the last four. Reigning world champions France will look to see off a strong England, but which nation will book their spot in the semi-finals?

Before Betting On England vs France

For the first time in international football history, England and France will lock horns in a knockout fixture. It is the first meeting at a major tournament between the rivals since Euro 2004, as France came back from 1-0 down to beat England 2-1 in the group stages. But, all previous head-to-heads go out the window when it comes to this meeting on Saturday.

The pressure is likely to be more on France, as they have the added responsibility of being defending champions at the World Cup. They booked their passage through to the quarterfinals in fine fashion against Poland, as they breezed through with a 3-1 win. Oliver Giroud broke the all-time scoring record for his nation with the opening goal, before Kylian Mbappe was at his brilliant best with a brace in the final 15 minutes.

However, this isn’t going to be an England side that is overawed by a quarterfinal against the reigning world champions, as Gareth Southgate has led the Three Lions to a semi-final and final in their previous two major competitions. England have grown into the competition in their previous two matches, as they have recorded successive 3-0 wins.

Despite underperforming for long periods in the first half against Senegal in the round of 16, the Three Lions still coasted ahead into a 2-0 lead following goals from Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane. Bukayo Saka added a third before the hour mark, showing just how poignant and devastating this Three Lions attack can be if given the chances.

This is such a tight fixture, and few would have complained if this were actually the match-up for the World Cup Final. However, England do look to have the players that could cause serious issues for a shaky French backline, and we could see them recording the biggest win of Gareth Southgate’s reign to set up another semi-final.
