While it may not be a national championship trophy, the winner of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl getting mayonnaise dumped on them seems like a fitting end to the season for either Maryland (7-5) or #23 NC State (8-4). The Terrapins got beat up in conference play, with all five of their losses coming to Big Ten opponents that are going to bowl games while NC State got befelled by injuries after a 4-0 start but still finished the regular season in the top 25.

Before Betting on the Duke’s Mayo Bowl

NC State QB Devin Leary is taking his talents through the transfer portal to Lexington, to be the heir apparent for possible NFL #1 draft pick Will Levis at Kentucky. Leary’s loss is big for the Wolfpack, but at the same time it isn’t as he’s been out since injuring his pectoral in week 16. With backup MJ Morris questionable and Jack Chambers falling out of favor with this staff it looks like one time QB4 Ben Finley has the best possible chance to start on Friday.

Finley finished out the year as the starter, but it’s the #21 ranked defense that the Wolfpack are going to rely on in this game. NC State allows just 19.4 ppg, but has given up more than that in six straight.

With Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa missing three of his top five WRs due to opt outs, could we see the Terrapins be more of a running team here? They do have a couple of talented redshirt freshman in the backfield with Roman Hemby and Antwaine Littleton II combining for nearly 1,300 yards with 16 TDs. At the very least it’s good to have options, something the NC State offense really doesn’t have.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl Prediction & Pick

Two of Maryland’s losses this season came against teams in the college football playoff (Michigan, Ohio State) and two other ones came against foes playing in an NY6 bowl (Penn State, Purdue) so this is a battle tested team that will represent the Big Ten well here.
Pick: Maryland +1
