The third and final soccer World Cup qualifier for the United States during this international break takes place on Wednesday evening, as the US will be looking to bounce back after a damaging defeat against Canada. It is a must win game for the United States, as dropped points could allow Mexico to jump into second place in the standings, while Panama are also ready to pounce.

USA vs Honduras Preview

America Looking For Immediate Response

It has been an eye-opening couple of days for the American players, as they have suddenly become aware that they are in a battle to finish in one of the qualifying spots for the World Cup this year. The US are still currently sitting second in the standings, but their position looks much weaker now than it did previously. They have just a single point advantage over Panama, who are fourth and sitting in the playoff spot. Falling into that spot would mean that they would need to play against the OFC winner to reach the World Cup later in the year.

But, at present their fate is still in their own hands, and they still look a good bet of reaching the World Cup by finishing in an automatic spot. The US are level on points with Mexico coming into this week’s game, but suffered a second defeat in qualification last time out against Mexico.

They were extremely flat in that fixture, and Canada were deserving winners, as they moved four clear of the US and Mexico. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the first ten minutes, before the victory was wrapped up with virtually the last kick of the game by Sam Adekugbe. A return to form is desperately needed by the US this week before huge games against Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica to round off qualifying next month.

Honduras Already Out Of Contention

Unfortunately, the hopes of Honduras of reaching the World Cup finals in Qatar are already over. They are set to finish bottom of the standings, as they have failed to pick up a victory, and have lost seven times in eight games. They have scored the fewest number of goals in qualifying, and have also conceded the most. Honduras has collected just three points from a possible 30, and their only target will be finishing off the bottom of the standings in the group.

Honduras were beaten in each of their last two qualifying matches over the past week, losing 2-0 to Canada before being beaten by the same scoreline against El Salvador over the weekend. There isn’t much reason for optimism coming into this fixture, and will likely look to play a defensive game and steal a point. But, that’s unlikely.

USA vs Honduras Prediction

We expect a strong response by the United States after a disappointing performance in their latest fixture against Canada. They will need to be much better on Wednesday night, but we expect to see a big win to put down a marker for the remainder of the qualification campaign.
