The first ever Europa Conference League Final takes place on Wednesday, as Italian giants AS Roma clash with Dutch outfit Feyenoord. Jose Mourinho will be looking to end his first season with the Italian club with a piece of silverware, as they begin to build ahead of next season.

AS Roma’s Route To The Final

It’s pretty hard to accurately assess whether this season has been a success or not for AS Roma. The club would have been hoping to force their way back into the Champions League with Mourinho, at the helm, but instead they finished sixth in the Serie A standings this season. But, ending the season with a piece of silverware would illustrate a fine debut season, and would keep fans on side.

Their run in the Europa Conference League hasn’t been without its low points, which included a 6-1 hammering in Norway against Bodo/Glimt in the group stages. Still, Roma were able to finish top of their group, and eased through the round of 16 and quarterfinals in ties against Vitesse and Bodo/Glimt.

Their biggest challenge came in the semi-finals, as they came up against Premier League side Leicester City. After a 1-1 draw was played out in the first leg, only one goal separated the sides back in Roma, as Tammy Abraham scored the winner after just eleven minutes.

Feyenoord’s Route To The Final

It has been a decent season for Feyenoord this term, and they will be looking for a first European success this week since their UEFA Cup win in the 2001-02 season. Their domestic form was strong throughout the campaign, but they eventually finished in third place; way off the pace set by Ajax and PSV. Still, ending the season with silverware would illustrate an excellent end to the campaign.

The Dutch side needed to make it through three qualifying rounds before the group stages, as they saw off FC Drita, FC Luzern and IF Elsborg. In the group stages, they saw off a pretty open looking group, as they won four of the six games that they played to finish above Slavia Prague and Union Berlin.

They haven’t lost since the group stages have gotten underway, and they eased through the round of 16 and quarterfinals with victories against Partizan and Slavia Prague. In the semi-finals, they came up against Marseille. Feyenoord won the home leg 3-2, with Cyriel Dessers scoring a brace, and Luis Sinisterra also scoring. The sides then played out a 0-0 draw in the second leg, which booked Feyenoord’s passage through to the final.

AS Roma vs Feyenoord Pick and Prediction

This is likely to be a closer final than many think. I think under 2.5 goals is a pretty good chance, as both sides will likely play defensive and try and sneak the winner. That could favour AS Roma, and I could see Tammy Abraham scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory.

Pick:

  • Tammy Abraham to score first and Roma to win 1-0 (+2000)
